Morocco and South Africa to host 2015 and 2017 Afcon

South Africa welcomed the decision by the Confederation of African Football to award the country the right to host the 2017 edition of the African Nations Cup tournament even though they submitted a bid to host the 2015 event.

In the DR Congo capital of Lubumbashi on Saturday, CAF President made the announcement after long deliberations that lasted nearly six hours, that Morocco has been awarded the right to host the 2015 edition and South Africa would stage the next edition.

The two countries were requested to make representations in front of the full CAF executive committee on Saturday morning and after six hours of deliberations, CAF eventually called a media briefing where they announced their decision.

2011 UEFA Europa League fever looms large

The race to Dublin and the 2011 UEFA Europa League title will step up when the competition resumes in February and given the drama of the group stage, it could be a rollercoaster ride.

The new year brings fresh challenges for the 32 remaining UEFA Europa League hopefuls, as the race for May's final and ultimately a place alongside deposed holders Club Atlético de Madrid on the trophy steps up. Given the drama of the group stage, it could be a rollercoaster ride.

The 144 group stage games brought thrills and spills, with Atlético and Italian giants Juventus among the high-profile casualties, and 1986 European champions FC Steaua Bucureşti sunk by SSC Napoli's penchant for late goals. Other established names, like Liverpool FC, FC Porto and PSV Eindhoven, did advance though nobody's progress was as serene 2008 UEFA Cup victors FC Zenit St Petersburg, the only side to advance with a 100% record.

Nine games now separate the Russian side and the title, starting with a meeting with BSC Young Boys. December's round of 32 draw also paired RSC Anderlecht and AFC Ajax, one of eight teams to transfer from the UEFA Champions League, and set up an all-Iberian affair between Sevilla FC and runaway Portuguese Liga leaders Porto. Liverpool take on AC Sparta Praha, with manager Roy Hodgson bidding to go one better than last season when he guided unfancied Fulham FC to the runners-up spot.

The final
The target for all 32 remaining teams is, of course, a trip to the final at the Dublin Arena on Wednesday 18 May. Ticket sales have already begun for applicants living in the Republic of Ireland and final ambassador Ronnie Whelan, the former Liverpool midfielder, promises "everyone will be blown away by the warm welcome".

Final branding for 2011 UEFA Champions League disclosed

The event design and final branding for the 2011 UEFA Champions League final were revealed at a ceremony held at Wembley Stadium.

Representatives from UEFA, The Football Association (FA) and the Greater London Authority were present as the logo was unveiled at Wembley's Great Hall by final ambassador Gary Lineker, who was relishing the prospect of welcoming the world's "biggest club match".

Returning to the 'Home of Football' for the first time in the UEFA Champions League era, the final on 28 May 2011 will crown a week-long festival in England's capital celebrating the biggest date in the UEFA club calendar.

The event design makes use of the UEFA Champions League Trophy as the central element of a heraldic crest that represents London's heritage, but its contemporary styling also reflects the city's international reputation for creativity. The trophy is flanked by two lions – an emblem found on statues, ironwork and paintings across the capital – which symbolise the two teams who will battle it out to be champions of Europe.

2011 UEFA Champions final ticket sales to start March 2011

Ticket sales for the 2011 UEFA Champions League final will start on UEFA.com website in March. While two clubs that reach the final will be allowed to handle sales for their own fans.

UEFA only handles ticket sales for the UEFA Champions League final – via UEFA.com.

The local organising committee will administer ticket sales to the football loving public for the 2011 UEFA Champions League final, to be held at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday 28 May.

Mexico national team to play against Paraguay in March

Mexico are set play South American rivals Paraguay in Oakland on March 26. The Mexican Football Federation and SUM made the announcement.

The match will be Mexico's second game of 2011, and the team's second game on American soil. Mexico will open their 2011 slate on Feb. 9 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Atlanta.

Both matches fall on FIFA international fixture dates, thus manager Jose Manuel "Chepo" De La Torre is in a position to call on the national team's European-based players like Javier Hernandez, Carlos Salcido and Giovani Dos Santos.

Mexico will make use of the tie to brace for defending their Gold Cup title in June and will play in Copa America come July. On the other hand, Paraguay will also take part in the Copa America. The match in Oakland will kickoff time at 2 p.m. PT since March 26 falls on a Saturday. But good football lies ahead for all.

Steven Pienaar signs for Tottenham

South African midfielder Steven Pienaar has confirmed that he is leaving Everton for Tottenham Hotspurs. The player opted for Spurs ahead of another lucrative deal from Chelsea.

Steven is to appear in Spurs colours over the weekend, and it is on record that he will be wearing jersey No. 40. Chelsea had originally seemed front-runners to secure the 28 year old services, having had their bid approved ahead of Spurs.

However they later revised their offer matching Chelsea's, and Pienaar has opted to make the shift to Redknapp's troops.

Inter Milan's deadly counter-attack strategy

Cast your mind back to the semi-finals of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League, when Inter Milan sent hot favourites Barcelona crashing out of the competition thanks to a tactical master class from coach Jose Mourinho.

I Nerazzurri subsequently progressed to the final in Madrid, eventually celebrating their third European crown with a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich. Whereas Barcelona and Bayern relied on possession and controlling the game's tempo, Inter's preferred tactic was a solid defence allied with targeted counter-attacks. Below, we take a look at the Inter Milan counter-attack style and relate it to EA SPORTS™ FIFA 11.

Getting forward quickly
Building on a solid defence is probably the best way to describe the individual tactic 'Counter' in EA SPORTS™ FIFA 11. The idea behind this system is to tempt the opposition into attacking and then take advantage of the resulting space in behind with quick, direct counter-attacks. The L2 button, which allows you to send your players clean through, plays an important role here. In order to execute the perfect counter-attack, you will need some speedy players in your squad, so make sure your strikers have good 'Pace' attributes.

Special Moves like the Stepover and the 360° turn can also be useful in one-on-one situations in the final third. You can find out how to execute these in our Special Moves Tutorial.

Maintaining a solid defence also allows you to make good use of the flanks. You can set your preferred mentality using the right directional button. We recommend combining the 'Counter' tactic with a more defensive mentality. If you have enough fast and skilful strikers in your team, 'very defensive' can also be a wise choice, though it will decrease the amount of opportunities you have to get forward.

The 'Counter' tactic is a sensible choice if you are up against an attacking team with three strikers. However, if your opponent is defensively-minded, it is probably better to adopt a more offensive approach.

What do you think of the 'Counter' tactic? An effective way of overcoming your opponent? Or do you feel that it ruins the flow of the game?

Sulley Muntari request transfer at Inter Milan

Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari has asked to leave Inter Milan, technical director Marco Branca said on today.

Speaking to Sky TV ahead of the champions' clash with Bologna at the San Siro, Branca admitted that the out of favour 26-year-old is angling for a move away from Milan.

Having been a near automatic first choice under Jose Mourinho in his first season at Inter, Muntari lost his place in the team last season and has featured even less this term. He's made just 12 appearances in all competitions, mostly as a substitute.

"He has made himself available to leave as long as a team wants him and is interested in him," said Branca. "He's a lad who is close to us, he's a good person even though sometimes he expresses opinions typical of someone who wants to play."

Hundreds of clubs to benefit from 2010 FIFA World Cup funds

Football governing body, FIFA announced that 400 clubs around the world are in line to receive a share of the benefits from the successful staging of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

FIFA set aside provisions of $ 40 million for the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa including $ 70 million for the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil to bolster the football clubs around the world, since they are the backbone of successful of the FIFA World Cup tournaments. The payments following the 2010 FIFA World Cup were distributed via the Member Associations to the clubs of the 736 players who participated in the 2010 Rumble in the Jungle.

Each club’s share of the $ 40 million was computed taking into consideration the number of players selected to represent their national team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the number of days each player spent at the football showpiece. This period begins two weeks prior to the opening match of the final competition.

Of the “total per player” amount, a pro rata share is then passed on to the club(s) with which a player was registered in the two year period before the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The top five clubs receiving a share of the benefits of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ were:

1. FC Barcelona with a total payment of USD 866,267; 2: FC Bayern München (USD 778,667); 3: Chelsea FC (USD 762,667); 4: Liverpool FC (USD 695,600); 5: Real Madrid CF (USD 678,133).

Numerous clubs that are not in the national top divisions will also benefit from such payments.

Jose Mourinho named 2010 FIFA Coach Of The Year Award

Jose Mourinho has been nominated the best coach of 2010 by FIFA after leading Inter Milan to the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League title last season. He beat Spain manager Vicente del Bosque, and Pep Guardiola, who took Barca to the Spanish title last season.

Now at Real Madrid in Spain's La Liga, Mourinho left Inter Milan after the club's most successful season in their history. Currently second in La Liga only behind rivals Barcelona, Mourinho has again transformed a side in need of something different, something special.

While over taking Barcelona as Spain's best club looks to be a difficult feat, Mourinho has Madrid qualified for the Champions League round of 16, in striking distance of Barcelona for top spot and has Madrid playing some of the best football in Europe.

Henri Michel to coach Equatorial Guinea until after the CAN-2012

The French coach Henri Michel signed Friday a contract with Equatorial Guinea making him the coach of the national football team, the Nzalang until the end of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) 2012, the signing took place in Malabo.

Mr. Michel, who was coach of the France national team from 1984 to 1988, signed the contract after discussions initiated by the authorities of Equatorial Guinea and his compatriot Philippe Troussier, the former coach of Ivory Coast and Morocco .

Mr. Troussier visited Malabo in November. No explanation was provided on the final choice.

Henri Michel replaces the Paraguayan Carlos Lobo Diarte, who coached the Nzalang since 2009 ("thunder" in local language). According to officials of the Federation of Equatorial Guinean football (Feguifoot), Mr. Lobo Diarte could not work with the selection since last August for health reasons.

"My ambition is to succeed in the organization of the CAN, the challenge is to create a strong team", for his part said Henri Michel, evading the question of compensation: "It's not very important, you must pass my challenge. It is important to be there. "

"Be aware, this is a chance and we need the participation of everyone, the public must be patient," he addded.

For the president of the Feguifoot, Bonifacio Manga Obiang, the signing of the contract with Michel Henry is "a great day for sport in Equatorial Guinea."

Manchester United on a roll

Sir Alex Ferguson is pleased to see his team managing to meet its goal of starting 2011 in a pole position. The veteran mentor pointed out that ''once you get to the New Year it gives you a good guide where you are going to be at the end of the season.....''.

He went onto mention that January will be a big month for the Red Devils, they will be facing Liverpool in the FA Cup and Tottenham the following week.

The Manchester United manager was speaking after victory over Stoke City - 2-1.

SA's Orlando Pirates target Champions League

South African side Orlando Pirates have set their sights on the 2012 Caf Champions League. To do this, the Bucaneers will need to either claim the Absa Premiership or finish as the runners-up.

The club lasted tasted glory in the tournament in 1995 by defeating Asec Abidjan of Ivory Coast in the final played over two legs.

Orlando Pirates are currently sitting in third position with 22 points, while log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns are five points clear of Rudi Krol's men.

Chelsea manager lucky to survive the chop

Carlo Ancelotti feels fortunate for surviving the axe, the mentor knows he was a good candidate to join the likes of Jose Mourinho who were fired by Abramovich following less impressive results.

Chelsea are currently struggling and Ancelotti acknowledges that his luck would eventually run out if the Blues' fortunes don't change.

Ramon Abramovich, owner of Chelsea did not agree to any new signings in the latest transfer window period. As a result, there aren't many options for the coach whenever the likes of Alex, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Ghana's Michael Essien are injured.

Queens Park Rangers keen on Benni McCarthy

Arsene Wenger confident of turning the tables against Barcelona

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that his team's match against Barcelona in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League is "difficult but possible."

"I did not want anyone in particular, since all other teams had also been difficult," Wenger said in a statement.

Arsenal will face Barcelona in a second consecutive season in the Champions League, the side responsible for its disposal in the previous season after the 4-1 defeat imposed at the Nou Camp.

Wenger admitted that, "It might have been easier Shalke". However, the Frenchman found a technical advantage for the clash with Barcelona, whose trip will take place on February 16 at the Emirates, given that they will be "vigilant and prepared" to the appointment.

Despite the expulsion dealt last season and the defeat of 2006 in the final of the Champions League Cup in France against the same opponents, the coach denied that revenge is the goal he and his boys.

"Revenge is not in my mind. We want to qualify and win. Is it difficult? Yes Is it possible? Also yes," said Wenger.
