Paraguay national team profile

The 2004 Olympic Games silver medalists, Paraguay qualified for this year's World Cup in a stunning fashion. The CONMEBOL outfit made it by becoming the second team to pull through.

They booked their place in South Africa ahead of the Argentina national team, Colombia, and Chile.

Following their participation at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the squad witnessed the retirement of a number of players such as the former World Goalkeeper of the Year, Jose Luis Chilavert and Carlos Gamarra among others.

And its rebuilding process involves players such as Julio dos Santos, Oscar Cardozo, Nelson Valdez, Justo Villar, Claudio Morel, Paulo Da Silva, Julio C. Caceres, Edgar Barreto, Jonathan Santana, Enrique Vera, Christian Riveros and veteran star Rogue Santa Cruz.

Paraguay will lock horns against the likes of Italy, New Zealand and Slovakia in Group F.

Meet the World Cup boss, Danny Jordan

Born on September 3, 1951, Danny Jordaan (seen here with Maradona) has extensively been involved with FIFA in various capacities which include being a match commissioner. He also served on the 2006 FIFA WC Organising Committee and the FIFA marketing and television board.

Jordaan holds a BA degree from the University of the Western Cape and an honours degree from the University of South Africa.

FIFA has expressed confidence in his administration for the 2010 event, amidst many challenges, they particularly applauded him for his level headedness and a continental and global approach.

Under his leadership infrastructure development has progressed according to plan, with many stadiums and other projects completed well ahead of schedule. And despite a slow start to ticket sales, they have since picked up with many games already sold out.

Sensationalism dogging SWC

Negative perceptions of South Africa being spun in the press are scuppering efforts to sell the event, as the total expected inflow of foreign fans has been revised halfway from about 450,000.

As it stands, the bulk of overseas fans coming to SA comprise Americans and British fans, while the remaining tickets are in the region of 300,000. FIFA is confident that at least 95% will be sold.

Sensational reports such as the one above are not the only culprits, as global financial pressures and the high tourists costs associated with the long haul trip down south have been cited by some German fans as deterrents.

Nevertheless, the show will go on minus the alleged bloodbaths or major incidence..

Celebrating football through art

The creative appeal of football action has mesmerised and captured the imagination of millions of people. It is through its dynamic mixture of collaborative motion and individual artistic ingenuity which fascinates its legion of fans, earning itself 'the beautiful game' status in the process.

The sport manages to inspire not only as an art form but as a universal language capable of promoting togetherness, thus forming a practical link with other less physical but visual forms of art. And to celebrate Africa's first football World Cup in South Africa, FIFA teamed up with the 2010 Fine Art project to highlight a wide selection of popular and upcoming artists drawn from various regions across the globe.

The project launched in Cape Town, South Africa will help in underlining the role of football in promoting social cohesion, while potraying Africa's changing face - it is for the very first time that a project of this nature has been licensed under the FIFA Master Licensee to produce and distribute fine art related to the 2010 FIFA World Cup (TM).

Essentially, this an opportunity for all involved to express the passion and appreciation of Africans towards football and the historic 2010 tournament, at the same time showcasing diverse national identities through sculptures, paintings and etchings among others. Some of the artists featured include Ian van Zyl of South Africa, Kofi Argosor of Ghana and Peter Phillips of England, and each of the collection under the 2010 Fine Art banner will be reproduced 210 times to symbolise the year 2010.

Former World Cup greats profiles - Jose Chilavert, Paraguay

Jose Luis Chilavert made a name for himself as a charismatic goalkeeper, he made his debut at age 15 - the Paraguayan earned his first national cap in 1989 and went onto to play for Real Zaragoza in Spain.

The firebrand goalkeeper was rewarded for his outstanding talents on the field in 1995 and 1997 by being crowned the World Goalkeeper of the Year, but his record is not without blemish as he often rubbed other players the wrong way - in 2002 he suffered a two match suspension for spitting on Roberto Carlos of Brazil in a World Cup qualifier.

However, many people fondly remember his legendary saves which other goalies consider impossible, his reflexes were powered by a fiercely aggressive approach, the former player believed no ball was beyond him.

Chilavert baffled many a strikers by routinely intercepting their goal bound shots from point blank range, thus it came as no surprise when he was announced as the world best goalie twice, and to top it up the star had a knack for taking free kicks and penalties so much that in-field players relied on him each time.

In retirement Chilavert feels that there is a dearth in forceful characters in today's crop of players and that football misses him - in 1998 he lit up the World Cup in France with his unbelievable interceptions.

Italy national soccer team profile

The Azzuri will make their way to South Africa in June adorned with a title none of the other 31 teams can lay claim to at the 2010 showpiece - being the defending champions.

The Italians are also four time winners of the greatest prize in world football, they have a proud history at the FIFA World Cup that stretches to the early 1930's. Their record speaks for itself - First round - 1950, 1954, 1962, 1966, 1974; 2nd round - 1986, 2002; 4th place - 1978; 3rd place - 1990. Runners-up - 1970, 1994, Champions - 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006.

And they are entering this year's Rumble in the Jungle as one of the hot favorites, buoyed by promises of hefty bonuses.

The European team qualified from Group 8 at the expense of Georgia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Montenegro and the Republic of Ireland. They topped the group with twenty four points in a fruitful campaign that saw them reaching the finishing line unbeaten. The worst that happened to the Italian squad in Group 8 were the draws against Republic of Ireland and Bulgaria.

In South Africa the Azurri will lock horns against the likes of Paraguay (ranked 29th), Slovakia (36) and New Zealand (77) in Group F. Italy Group F matches will take place on the following dates - (all times EST, 2010), June 15, 04:30: Italy v Paraguay, Cape Town; June 21, 00:00: Italy v New Zealand, Nelspruit; June 25, 00:00: Slovakia v Italy, Johannesburg.

The Paraguay fixture at the magnificent Cape Town Stadium (Greenpoint) is the certainly the trickiest, considering Paraguay's exploits in the qualifiers in which they made it through ahead of powerhouse Argentina.

Some of the most notable names in the Azzuri camp include Fabio Cannavaro, Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo, Fabio Grosso and their coach is Marcello Lippi.

54 000 free WC tickets for construction workers

In recognition of the role played by construction workers of World Cup stadia, the Local Organising Committee (LOC)announced it would keep its promise, by affording the workmen and women a chance to witness the planet's greatest soccer showcase.

The workers contributed immensely to ensuring the organizers achieved the set targets as required by FIFA. Today almost all stadiums are 100% complete, with a few final touches left for the rest of them.

The beautiful facilities such as the one above situated in Port Elizabeth, whose images form part of the 2010 Fine Art project exhibitions, are set to provide a magnificent stage for Africa's first World Cup.
